Automatic Identification Devices Comprehensive Guide

Modern logistics, production and trade systems are based on the rapid flow of information. AutoID automatic identification devices based on 1D barcode systems and two-dimensional (2D) codes allow for error-free data collection in real time.

Professional Auto-ID equipment can be divided into three main product groups:

  • Data reading devices – wired and wireless barcode scanners and 2D code readers.
  • Mobile devices for data collection – industrial mobile terminals and data collectors with a built-in scanning module.
  • Marking devices – desktop or industrial barcode and label printers.

Barcode Scanners

Barcode scanners are basic AutoID devices whose main task is to read data stored in linear (1D) or two-dimensional (2D, e.g. QR, Data Matrix) code and immediately send this information to the master system (WMS, ERP, POS).

Types of barcode readers:

  • Handheld readers are the most popular scanners with an ergonomic pistol grip and a trigger button. Depending on the needs of the workstation, code scanners can be wired (USB/RS232) or wireless (Bluetooth/radio).
  • Stationary scanners are devices built into the cash register counter or permanently standing at the workplace. They have a wide field of view and constantly emit a beam of light. The reading occurs automatically when the label is brought close to the scanner window.
  • Ring scanners are miniature finger-mounted readers that connect wirelessly to a terminal worn on the forearm. Used wherever multitasking is required and both hands are free (e.g. when sorting and picking packages).
  • Industrial readers, most often stationary, advanced video cameras, rigidly mounted above production lines and conveyor belts in sorting plants. They work fully automatically, decoding codes from objects moving at high speed.

Mobile terminals and data collectors

Data collectors (portable terminals) are advanced handheld computers equipped with a professional scanning module, a powerful processor, RAM, a touch screen and an operating system, most often Android. They allow you to process and send data directly from the place where logistics operations are performed.

Types of industrial terminals:

  • Pocket terminals resemble rugged smartphones with a high sealing rating (IP). Used by couriers, traders and store employees to verify prices and accept deliveries.
  • Pistol grip warehouse terminals are heavier equipment with high drop resistance, equipped with a physical keyboard. They often have Long-Range scanners, which allow for error-free reading of codes from a distance of up to several meters.
  • Trolley terminals: Industrial computers with large screens, permanently mounted on forklifts. They are powered directly from the vehicle’s battery and show extreme resistance to strong shocks and vibrations.
  • Wearable terminals are small computers that are mounted on the operator’s forearm. In combination with the ring scanner, they create an ergonomic set for fast order picking.

Barcode Printers

Marking devices are specialized label printers equipped with in-house 1D and 2D barcode generators.

Due to the printing technology, these devices are divided into two categories:

Printer Type Printing technology Application and characteristics
Thermal Printers The print is created under the influence of the heat of the head on thermal paper. Short-term marking, courier labels, receipts. Sensitive to temperature and light.
Thermal Transfer Printers Printing is carried out using thermal transfer ink tape (tracing paper). Permanent marking of paper and foil labels and textile labels. Abrasion and weather resistant.

Accessories in AutoID Systems

Auxiliary devices automate, speed up and eliminate human error during the preparation and application of code labels. In mass production and logistics centers, they prevent the formation of so-called bottlenecks.

  • Label winders – External devices placed in front of the outlet of an industrial printer. Automatically printed labels into even rolls, ready for further use in dispensers or applicators.
  • Label unwinders feed clean labels to the printer from an external, large-size roller. Used to reduce production downtime associated with the replacement of smaller inner rollers.
  • Label dispensers, feeders automatically slide the label out of the roll and peel off its edge from the backing paper. Equipped with a photocell – after the employee picks up the label, the device immediately prepares the next one.
  • Automatic and semi-automatic label applicators are mechanical devices that eliminate human involvement from the process of applying labels to finished products, bottles or multipacks.
  • Barcode verifiers are used to check the quality of printed barcodes and two-dimensional codes installed directly at the output of the printer. They scan the code in real time and evaluate its parameters (contrast, geometry) in accordance with international ISO standards. Detecting a defective or poorly printed code results in an immediate stop of the line or the label being marked as recoil.

FAQ – Auto ID devices

What is Auto ID?

Automatic Identification refers to modern technologies dedicated to reading and collecting data automatically without entering information manually, such as barcode systems and RFID systems. Auto ID systems include barcode printers, barcode readers, barcode verifiers, data terminals, scanner modules, and smart cameras.

How does an automatic identification system work?

Automatic identification systems use scanner modules and barcode readers to read information stored in barcodes on labels. The read data are sent to a computer system where they are analyzed and compared with a database. Automatic identification systems, based on barcodes and two-dimensional codes, are highly effective and accurate, minimize human error in data entry, and are a relatively cost-effective solution.

What are Auto ID systems?

Auto ID systems are used to identify, record, and store data in manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, and business processes. Applications of Auto ID systems:
• Production tracking,
• Returnable packaging management,
• Optimization of warehouse processes, inventory management,
• Tracking shipments throughout the supply chain,
• Documentation management,
• Controlling access to specific areas.
