Why we recommend replacing the head and roller every year
The print head is the most heavily worked part of a label printer – it’s where the label material wears against it (and, in thermal transfer printing, the TTR ribbon too), and each heating element is responsible for print quality and legibility, including of barcodes. The platen roller works alongside the head, keeping even pressure on the media – its wear directly affects print quality and consistency.
Based on our servicing experience, we recommend replacing both parts once a year under typical, everyday use. This isn’t a cost you can avoid – it’s a cost you’ll pay one way or another, either as a planned replacement or as a breakdown, production downtime, and a rushed express part order. The iD2X and iD4S are direct thermal printers – they don’t need a ribbon, which lowers the cost of materials, but the printout is less resistant to abrasion, light, and high temperatures. The iD4S works particularly well for logistics and shipping labels, where a label only needs to “live” briefly – from dispatch to delivery. The iT4B, despite being a desktop model, prints using thermal transfer technology – a good choice when a label needs to outlast the shipment itself.
