RFID systems for waste management

An RFID system for municipal waste disposal management involves marking containers or bags with special RFID tags that contain a unique identification number of a given household or company. Municipal vehicles, equipped with RFID readers, automatically read data from RFID tags when emptying containers, which allows for precise records of collections, monitoring the frequency of collections. Both RFID tags and the devices that garbage trucks are equipped with are resistant to weather conditions, low and high temperatures, as well as mechanical damage. RFID tags placed on bins and containers allow you to carry out inventory, keep records of repairs or quickly locate lost containers. An RFID system for waste management increases the transparency of settlements, reduces illegal waste disposal, optimizes transport costs and increases the efficiency of the entire system.

  • Quick identification of containers and waste records.
  • Fairer billing for residents.
  • Reducing illegal dumping.
  • Improving the efficiency of municipal companies.
  • Better control of sorting and recycling rates.

How RFID for waste management works

An RFID waste management system is an integrated IT and logistics solution that supports the entire waste management process. Buckets, containers and bags are marked with RFID tags in which the identification number of the user – the owner of the property – is encoded. Municipal vehicles, equipped with GPS devices, RFID readers and weighing systems, automatically read data from RFID chips during waste collection and record data about the place, time and amount of waste collected. This information is delivered in real time to a central platform, where it is collected and analyzed. The system enables planning and optimization of garbage truck routes, control of the performance of services, settlement of residents according to the actual amount or type of waste returned, as well as preparation of reports required by law.

What does an RFID waste management system consist of?

An RFID system for waste management consists of several basic elements that work together to enable the identification of containers and control of the waste collection process:

  • RFID tags – durable and resistant RFID tags for marking containers, bins, containers or bags. RFID labels that work in the HF and UHF bands can be used in waste management.
  • RFID readers – devices mounted on garbage trucks and at collection points that read data from tags when emptying containers.
  • Location and recording system (GPS, scales, sensors) – optional elements that allow you to record the exact place and time of emptying the container, as well as the weight of the collected waste.
  • On-board terminal – a device that collects data from RFID readers and sensors and then sends it to a central database.
  • Central IT system – software that collects, analyzes and archives data. It enables reporting, route planning, resident billing and control of recycling levels.
