RFID gates

An RFID gate is a system component comprised of RFID readers and connected antennas. Its task is to automatically identify objects equipped with RFID tags. Using radio waves, the gate reads the data stored in RFID tags within its range, for instance, when passing through the gate. RFID gates operate autonomously, registering the movement and counting the number of people, goods, raw materials, and tools. The data read from the tags is automatically transmitted to the system. RFID gates provide high reading accuracy and greatly facilitate the management of logistics and manufacturing processes.

  • High-speed and error-free reading of multiple tags,
  • Automatic registration of finished goods and products,
  • Monitoring the flow of raw materials and tools,
  • Controlling the movement of employees,
  • Tracking the circulation of returnable packaging,
  • Anti-theft surveillance in stores and workplaces.

Custom RFID gates

RFID gates are designed to meet individual needs and specific applications, for example, goods flow registration, inventory management, access control, and people movement tracking. Designing an appropriate RFID gate requires analyzing the working environment, followed by selecting components with the right parameters, including the RFID reader, RFID antennas, controller, and power supply. The reader must have adequate power and number of ports, the antennas must be well-adapted in terms of read range and direction, and the very design must be durable and aesthetic.  Depending on the environment, additional security features or housing resistant to harsh industrial conditions may also be required. It is also essential to limit the operating range, eliminate interference, and ensure integration with the IT system (ERP, WMS). Custom RFID gates can be optionally fitted with additional elements, including motion sensors, monitoring cameras, or audible and visual alarms that activate when the desired RFID tag is detected. The purpose of the whole process of designing and building an RFID gate is to ensure reliable, autonomous reading of RFID tags and effective information flow management.

RFID portals, RFID tunnels

RFID portals and RFID tunnels are ready-made solutions from ZEBRA designed for automatic RFID tag reading at specific logistics, manufacturing, and warehouse points. Integrated portals, comprised of an RFID reader and an RFID antenna, are practical and easy-to-install products. Installed at warehouse entrances and exits or checkpoints, they can serve as simple RFID gates.

An RFID tunnel is a closed structure through which tagged items pass. The items are most frequently placed on the belt or roller conveyors. Inside the tunnel, antennas are arranged to enable accurate reading of all tags located in bulk packaging, cartons, or parcels. RFID tunnels are mainly used in packing, order picking, and shipping processes – anywhere where accuracy, repeatability, and elimination of human errors are essential. With full shielding, the tunnel eliminates outside interference, ensuring precise identification of the shipment’s contents.

Both solutions significantly increase the efficiency and precision of logistics and warehouse operations.
