Mobile terminals (mobile computers) are portable devices that combine the functions of a computer, barcode scanner and messenger to collect, process and transmit data in real time. Mobile data terminals are used in trade, logistics, warehouses, transport or field services, facilitating tasks such as inventory and inventory management. They are designed for field work thanks to battery power and wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE). These devices are typically heavy-duty and run on operating systems such as Android or Windows.
What is a mobile data terminal used for?
A mobile computer is used to quickly collect, process and transmit data in the field, most often by scanning barcodes or RFID tags. With Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE/5G, and sometimes GPS wireless communication, the mobile terminal provides real-time access to the base. It allows you to update inventory, carry out inventory, handle deliveries and releases of goods, and supports the work of couriers, salespeople and technicians, providing them with access to the necessary data directly at the place of duty.
The main difference between a mobile computer and a data collector lies in the range of functions and capabilities of the device. A mobile computer is a more advanced, multifunctional device with its own operating system, barcode scanner, touch screen and the ability to install applications. A data collector, on the other hand, is a simpler device whose main task is to scan barcodes and save data, usually with a limited interface and less expandability. Most often, after collecting information, the data collector saves it in the internal memory and then sends it to a computer.
Mobile terminals, due to their design and application, can be divided into the following groups:
1. Handheld mobile computers – these are handy devices with a handle and a built-in code scanner, a touch screen and, depending on the model, with or without a keyboard. Most often used in warehouses and logistics centers, large-format stores and by couriers.
2. Wearable computers – attached to the hand or wrist and connected to a ring scanner. The wearable terminals are very light and comfortable, allowing for two-handed operation.
3. Vehicle mounted computers – mobile computers designed to be mounted on forklifts and warehouse vehicles. Trolley terminals (on-board terminals) have a design that is resistant to shocks, water, dust and changing temperatures.
Mobile data terminals are used wherever rapid collection and transmission of information in the field is needed. Mobile computers are used in warehouses and logistics centers to receive, issue and inventory goods, as well as track the flow of products. In retail, they support store staff, inventory control and back-office work. In transportation and courier services, they are used to confirm deliveries, scan packages, and monitor the status of shipments in real-time. In industry, mobile terminals are used to record operations on production lines and for quality control. Mobile computers are also used in field work and service, where they provide access to documentation, orders and the ability to record performed activities directly at the workplace.
